Winter Maintenance Supervisor Certificate

The Winter Maintenance Supervisor Certificate is for supervisors and managers to:

• Expand knowledge of planning and preparation
• Increase understanding of winter weather and how it affects operations
• Identify how to better use traditional and alternative chemicals
• Consider what equipment is available and how to maintain it
• Expand understanding of snow & ice control techniques
• Appreciate the environmental impacts of winter maintenance policies
• Stress responsible application

Resulting in more effective, efficient, equitable and environmentally friendly snow and ice control.

It is typically an all-day workshop with testing throughout the day. Attendees receive a Certificate of Completion upon achieving a score or 80% or above. This is a fantastic training opportunity for new supervisors, senior operators or anyone wanting a good overall understanding of winter maintenance operations and a great way to start the conference.

The APWA Winter Maintenance Supervisor Certificate Workshop is the source for earning this certificate. It is offered annually on the first day of APWA’s North American Snow Conference. The program is reviewed and updated annually at the North American Snow Conference. In addition, APWA has made this Workshop available for chapters to use as a supplement to their local Annual Conference or other chapter event. How much time will it take?

The Workshop may be conducted in a one- or two-day format, depending on the chapter’s preferences.  When held in conjunction with the North American Snow Conference, it is a one-day event.

How much will it cost my chapter?

The cost to receive the Workshop content is $1000 US. Chapters should also estimate $35 US per attendee for printing/purchase of materials. Additional costs may be incurred for speakers, facility use, audio/visual equipment, computer(s), and/or food and beverages. The chapter may charge a registration fee to recover some of the event costs. If charging a registration fee, it is recommended that fee be slightly higher for non-members. Chapters are encouraged to consider getting sponsorships to offset expenses. APWA provides a list of approved speakers for this event; the chapter is responsible for selecting speaker(s) and scheduling.

What are the requirements for hosting a local certificate workshop?

Requirements for chapters wishing to host a certificate workshop are as follows:

• Financial responsibility for all expenses required to conduct the workshop
• Classroom facility
• Lunch and refreshments
• Speaker Coordination, expenses and compensation (if required)
• Agreement to run workshop as designed
• Printing/purchase & distribution of manual, operator guide and certificates
• Administration of workshop, including grading of tests and documentation of scores and attendees
