Norwalk, Connecticut—APWA joined federal, state, and local leaders today to highlight the WALK Bridge Replacement Project as part of the Engineering & Public Works Roadshow.
APWA Region I Director Rich Benevento, P.E., represented the association at the event and emphasized the critical role of public works professionals in advancing resilient, reliable, and long-lasting infrastructure.
“This project reflects the very best of public works leadership,” said Benevento. “It demonstrates thoughtful planning, strong engineering, collaboration across sectors, and a commitment to ensuring infrastructure remains dependable for the next generation.”
The WALK Bridge Replacement Project is one of Connecticut’s most significant infrastructure investments. The existing bridge — a 128-year-old swing span that supports the Northeast Corridor — has reached the end of its service life. Repeated mechanical failures have affected passenger rail operations, freight service, and maritime navigation along the Norwalk River.
The replacement bridge is being constructed to meet modern performance, safety, and resiliency standards and will support the region’s mobility and economic growth for decades to come.
The Engineering & Public Works Roadshow is jointly presented by APWA, the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The initiative recognizes public infrastructure projects across the country that exemplify innovation, public benefit, and strong partnerships between public works and engineering professionals.
Benevento called the WALK Bridge Replacement Project a national example of how complex infrastructure challenges can be addressed through coordination, community involvement, and long-term investment strategies.
“Public works professionals are on the front lines of planning, designing, maintaining, and securing the assets our communities rely on every day,” Benevento said. “Events like this help elevate that work and demonstrate the value public works brings to the nation.”
