KANSAS CITY, MO–The American Public Works Association (APWA) received the prestigious MarCom Gold Award in the nonprofit sector for its 2025 brand video, Public Works: A Kid’s Perspective. This award honors excellence in marketing and communications while recognizing the creativity, hard work, and generosity of industry professionals. This year, there were more than 6,000 entries from throughout the United States, Canada, and 41 other countries.

Public Works: A Kid’s Perspective was a highlight for nearly 7,000 attendees of APWA’s Public Works Expo (PWX), the largest conference for public works professionals, held in August in Chicago. The video shares how children see the everyday heroes who keep our cities safe, clean, and thriving. From building parks to repairing roads, the video showcases their fun and heartfelt answers about what public works is and why it’s important.

“We are deeply honored to receive the MarCom Gold Award for Public Works: A Kid’s Perspective. This recognition affirms the importance of telling our story in a way that resonates with future generations and reminds us that public works touches every part of community life,” said APWA President Vic Bianes, PE.

The MarCom Award is highly sought after and winning one means receiving peer recognition from the creative industry. MarCom winners range from huge international creative agencies and Fortune 500 companies to individual creative professionals. Judges are industry professionals who look for companies and individuals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry. Winners are selected from over 300 categories in Print, Web, Video, and Strategic Communications.

“Without public works, nothing works. No clean water, no sewers, no showers. No roads, bridges, or bike paths, and no one to clear snow, ice, or storm debris from our streets,” said APWA CEO Scott D. Grayson, CAE. “The kids featured in the video expertly shared the fact that public works touches every part of our daily lives. Through their eyes, they reminded us how essential these services are and that we shouldn’t take them for granted.”
