The APWA Reporter printed magazine has a digital twin! The October edition—focused on winter maintenance and operations—is now available online and features subject matter experts and leaders from within the APWA membership sharing their perspectives on technology, emergency response, crew morale and workforce development, and more.
APWA President Vic Bianes, PE, opens with a message about how winter maintenance and operations professionals are the epitome of APWA’s “People, Purpose, Presence” theme, writing:
“People are the backbone of winter maintenance . . . This is more than just showing up for a job. It’s showing up for a purpose. That’s the purpose behind public works: to protect and serve our communities in all conditions . . . But just showing up physically isn’t enough anymore . . . That’s why many public works agencies are embracing tools like snowplow tracking maps, social media alerts, and real-time dashboards.”

Navigating deeper into this edition, you’ll find a variety of personal and technical articles that bring winter maintenance and operations to life.
- In “Wisconsin Salt Wise Practices: A Win for the Triple Bottom Line,” Allison Madison, Wisconsin Salt Wise program manager, points to case studies from two Wisconsin agencies.
- Edgar Cano, public works director for the City of Evanston, Illinois, opens up about a deeply personal, poignant, and powerful life struggle in “Facing the Storm: Balancing Operations and the Battles at Home.”
- James Lake, Michigan Department of Transportation, tells a story of critical collaboration in “First Responders Work Across State Lines to Recover From Epic Ice Event.”
That’s just a sample of the great content available in this issue.
