In the past, PWX has featured sessions on the “big city” practices for incorporating active transportation principles into the urban infrastructure. This speaker, from the Village of Lombard, Illinois, will share the small city/suburban perspective on creating a more inviting walking and biking environment. Learn about the Village’s journey through the steps of creating a Complete Streets Policy; developing a Village Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan; collaborating with agency partners (municipal, county, federal); acquiring consistent local funding; and negotiating with political and other stakeholders. Among the improvements implemented included the first village bike lanes, a bicycle/pedestrian signage network, and shared-use paths. They are now in the process of securing funding sources for larger projects and sustaining the program’s momentum.

Learning Objectives:

1. Develop successful walking/biking strategies and initiatives with stakeholder support.

2. Determine partnering opportunities and potential funding mechanisms.

3. Identify appropriate locations and treatments for infrastructure improvements.
