Sponsored by APWA’s Solid Waste Management Committee Several APWA members visited the “zero waste” community of Boras, Sweden to examine how they harvest biogas from organic waste, sewage sludge, and old city landfill. The biogas fuels city buses and vehicles. A waste-to-energy plant center produces electricity and central heating which heats 85% of the city’s buildings.

Learning Objectives:

1.     Identify the next steps in waste management and recycling.

2.     Challenge your community with new ways of thinking about waste.

3.     Determine which of the approaches used in Boras Sweden could be replicated by your community.
