Studies indicate that while vehicle defect and mechanical failure and roadway and weather conditions are contributors to crashes, it is road user error that is responsible nearly 57% of the time. The Federal Highway Administration is presenting this session about how human factors affect roadway safety. Practical examples will be offered for how to design roadways, install traffic control devices, and provide traveler information that takes into consideration such human factors as driver expectancy and reaction time, driver distractions, and decision-making capabilities.

Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss the human factors that affect roadway safety.

2. Identify human capabilities and limitations that affect road user awareness.

3. Develop roadway design plans that take human factors into consideration.
