Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP)

The Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), which was signed into law on August 10, 2005, established the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) as a core Federal-aid program. The overall purpose of this program is to achieve a significant reduction in traffic fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads through the implementation of infrastructure-related highway safety improvements.

This program will feature case studies explaining how funding is made available for both low-cost, widespread improvements and higher-cost spot improvements on the state, federal and county levels. Learn more about how funding decisions are made, the balance between making low-cost and higher cost improvements and the benefits of having your safety priorities already identified for future funding opportunities.

After viewing this program, participants will be better able to:

  1. Implement a data-driven roadway safety management process
  2. Recognize how improved signing, improved pavement markings, the addition of guideposts, the addition of rumble strips and clear zone improvements can increase safety
  3. Develop a systematic approach to safety improvement
