Session 1: The Tale of Three Cities – How to Plan, Staff and Report on Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Maintenance in Various Climate Zones

Green Infrastructure (GI) installations are expanding, yet the understanding of the maintenance needs of GI is still in its infancy. Three cities with different climates will discuss how they plan, track, and budget for GSI maintenance. Good design starts with field observations, involving maintenance considerations in the design phase and level of service expectations with regard to commonalities and climate-driven differences.

Learning Objectives:

1. Strategize when and how to involve maintenance leads in the facility design phase.

2. Utilize examples for asset management and O&M planning including specialty computer programs, guidance documents and staffing alternatives.

3. Formulate appropriate reporting to your management addressing GSI functions under specific climate conditions.

Speaker: Peg Staeheli, PLA, FASLA, Principal, MIG|SvR

Session 2: Green Infrastructure: Lessons Learned from Design, Construction and Maintenance of Stormwater Planters
The City of Eugene, Oregon, has developed planning and design standards for the construction of vegetated stormwater planters for both new development and water quality retrofits. They will share lessons learned for how to design and construct planters that effectively treat stormwater and can be easily maintained. The costs associated with the project will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the important design components of vegetated stormwater planters in order to implement your own designs.

2. Evaluate whether the design standards for vegetated stormwater planters developed by the City of Eugene would work for your situation.

3. Discuss the long-term maintenance requirements and costs associated with vegetated planters.

Speaker: Doug Singer, PE, CSM, Principal Civil Engineer, City of Eugene Oregon
