Seasonal help can be a challenge for public service organizations. In public works, so much of the work is response-oriented, and every day is different. Often, this can make seasonal work feel like an afterthought or perhaps even a burden to manage. This presentation shows how the Village of Downers Grove, Illinois, has developed its seasonal engineering intern opportunities into a robust and standardized program, with the goal of maximizing the value both parties take away from the experience. This includes the use of introductory onboarding videos, weekly lunch and learns, project/department rotation schedules, resumé workshops, and skill development checklists. Engineering staff will discuss the previous pain points and pitfalls of “the way we’ve always done it,” the need for change, and what the future looks like for sustaining this approach. Attendees will gain inspiration to take back to their agencies in an effort to view these seasonal workers as valuable contributors and future ambassadors of the organization.

After this session, participants will be better able to:
• Appraise your organization’s current approach to seasonal workers.
• Identify opportunities to standardize and develop seasonal tasks, onboarding, and education.
• Initiate ideas for seasonal workers that are customized to your work group and organization’s characteristics and strengths.
