The overall experience of a special event can hinge on event transportation management, which includes considerations for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Addressing circulation at large-scale, publicized events requires a holistic, interdisciplinary perspective paired with technical expertise, responsive design, and breakthrough technologies. Kimley-Horn’s event traffic management showcases include the 2019 Super Bowl LIII and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup in Atlanta, Georgia. Super Bowl LIII required keeping traffic moving not only before, during, and after the big game, but for satellite events attended by approximately one million people taking place throughout the week. To address traffic circulation, Atlanta implemented innovations such as the “green carpet,” in which traffic signals along key downtown arterials were switched to green in unison to transport key Super Bowl participants and officials; pedestrian scrambles, in which all traffic signals were switched to red to allow for all-walk signs as pedestrians flooded intersections; and the development of Know-Before-You-Go maps issued prior to the game to help direct event attendees to rideshare zones built in coordination with navigation and rideshare applications. Looking ahead at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Kimley-Horn will draw on success stories and lessons learned from Super Bowl LIII and other special events while adapting our playbook and growing suite of technology resources.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Recognize the challenges posed by special events to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
• Review Atlanta’s approach to addressing traffic circulation during the 2019 Super Bowl LIII and associated events.
• Grasp the role of technology resources in event transportation management.
