From southern states to the northern-most provinces, liquids are part of the public works toolbox for fighting snow and ice. This lightning round presentation will cover topics relating to the use of liquids in winter maintenance, including why we should use them, how to make brine, how to store liquids, pre-treating stockpiles, pre-wetting solids, anti-icings, difficulties with implementation, how to de-ice with liquids, costs and savings in liquid usage, sustainability issues and liquid usage, blending of liquids, and use of liquid-only routes.

Learning Objectives:

1. Examine how liquids work as a winter maintenance tool, and the benefits and drawbacks of their use including reductions in salt use and cost.

2. Determine when to apply liquids and when not to, and identify the appropriate rates and frequency of such applications.

3. Describe how blended liquids provide enhanced performance in relation to unblended liquids and explain the limitations of blended liquids.
