The New Initiatives Fall 2026 application cycle is now open.
Do you have an idea that could provide an innovative solution to other members or chapters, create a new approach to strengthen the public works industry or an idea to support the work of the APWA Strategic Plan?
What’s New for Fall 2026
Beginning this fall, APWA is introducing a two-phase application and review process designed to make it easier for members to bring forward new ideas.
The first step is a brief Phase 1 application outlining your idea, the need or opportunity it addresses, its potential impact and how it connects to the APWA Strategic Plan.
Phase 1 applications are due November 12, 2026. Learn more about the application process and apply today.
Turning Member Ideas Into Impact
Now entering its fourth year, the New Initiatives Program was created to encourage entrepreneurial thinking and support ideas that enhance experiences, products, services, and educational opportunities. Previous funded initiatives have included:
- A reverse trade show and vendor engagement event hosted by the Georgia Chapter.
- A hands-on workforce development program introducing students in grades 4-12 to public works careers designed by the San Diego Imperial County Chapter.
- A workforce development and mentorship program hosted by the Sacramento Chapter.
Awardees are also asked to share the results of their completed projects so others can learn from their experience, build on successful ideas, and potentially adapt them for use in their own agencies or chapters.
“The New Initiatives Committee strives to help our members bring forward bold, creative concepts that will shape the future of public works,” said Jeffrey Brown, PE, New Initiatives Committee Chair and APWA Finance Committee Representative. “If you have an idea that can elevate our profession—whether through innovation, technology, chapter engagement, education, or any other way—we want to hear from you. I strongly encourage members to apply and share their vision for what’s next.”
Phase 1 submissions will be reviewed based on alignment with APWA’s Strategic Plan, innovation and potential, anticipated impact, initial feasibility, and member value. Selected applicants will be invited to develop a more detailed Phase 2 proposal. Award announcements will be announced in February 2027.
