Accreditation could feel intimidating, and it was easy for agencies to get caught up in assumptions about how the process might differ based on size. However, the reality was that the core requirements, process, and outcomes were consistent for all agencies. APWA accreditation was flexible in how it applied across organizations while still maintaining a consistent standard. Once participants understood how the process worked in practice, agencies were able to approach both self-assessment and accreditation with greater clarity and confidence. Along the way, participants gained insight into how agencies of different sizes successfully navigated the process and used accreditation as a tool for improvement.

This open forum featured experienced evaluators and representatives from agencies that have gone through accreditation. Panelists shared how agencies of varying sizes worked through the process using their existing practices and day-to-day operations. From smaller teams where staff managed multiple responsibilities to larger agencies with more complex structures, speakers discussed how they made accreditation manageable, addressed common challenges, and reflected on what they wished they had known when they started. The session also included time for questions and discussion, allowing participants to hear candid perspectives and practical guidance to support their own accreditation journey.
