Nationally Black, Indigenous, and people of color (minorities) continue to have obstacles placed in their way to lead at the highest levels of their departments and organizations. The speaker wrote an article called “Diversifying Your Leadership Team” in Public Management magazine, where he provided seven considerations to recruit, retain, and promote minority talent. In this presentation, the speaker will provide an understanding of the obstacles minorities continue to have in place, statistical evidence to solidify the claims, and challenge organizations and leadership to think through solutions. This presentation will provide a combination of personal experience and specific examples of how diversifying your leadership team can make your organization better, which makes your community better. The seven considerations the speaker will provide specific examples of are: Do not reinvent the wheel. Inclusion and diversity should be actions, not just words. Take a chance on someone. Recruit local talent. Become uncomfortable. Ask better questions. Follow platinum rule. This session was selected as the The Myron D. Calkins “Excellence in Leadership” Series Presentation.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Recognize obstacles minorities face getting to the highest levels of leadership in a department.
• Consider solutions to diversify their leadership team.
• Conceptualize why diversifying a leadership team makes their organization and community better.
