The City of Toronto, facing ongoing challenges with growth, construction, and congestion, deployed the Road Disruption Activity Reporting System (RoDARS) Central in 2023. This innovative system, based on Transnomis’ Permit Central platform, modernizes the process by which utility companies, contractors, and construction firms apply for road work permits. RoDARS Central allows these stakeholders to easily submit applications through a map-based interface that provides city staff with a comprehensive view of current and planned disruptions. By delivering real-time data and visualizing the impact of construction projects on road networks, RoDARS helps minimize disruption in Toronto, Canada’s most congested city. The system has streamlined the application review process, significantly reducing processing time for city staff. It enables applicants and city staff to evaluate potential conflicts or disruptions before finalizing plans, fostering better coordination and planning among stakeholders. The presentation will cover the entire journey of RoDARS Central, from concept to its successful implementation, offering insights into how the system addresses urban traffic challenges. The discussion will include lessons learned from the Toronto deployment and highlight RoDARS’ potential as a scalable solution for congestion and disruption management in other municipalities. This session will be invaluable for cities grappling with similar growth and infrastructure challenges.
After this session, participants will be better able to:
• Optimize road disruption management. Participants will be better able to streamline the application and review process for road work permits, reducing approval times and minimizing congestion in urban environments.
