Workforce Development Committee News

Donna Shea
Workforce Development Committee Chair

The APWA Workforce Development Committee (WDC) is committed to supporting our public works agencies as they work through their workforce challenges. We are a small, passionate group working hard to develop tools for your workforce toolbox on education, recruitment, and retention. At PWX, we launched our new WDC Roadmap which outlines our strategic approach. In November, the committee will host a Click, Listen and Learn session on Enhancing the Employee Experience. We are also happy to support the content of Focus on Public Works by providing monthly workforce development quick tips and tools.

While we understand that workforce development solutions are not a “one size fits all approach,” the WDC believes that we can learn from each other’s success and are collecting, developing, and sharing resources for you to implement in your agencies. Many are easy, no cost opportunities for APWA chapters to use in their existing efforts.

If interested in joining as a knowledge team member or member of a working group, we would love to hear from you at education@apwa.org and to learn from your successes.

Resources

Promoting Public Works as an Exciting Career Choice

Members of our WDC recruiting working group developed a promotional tool for chapters to use in their recruiting efforts. Click here to access the new promotional brochure that can be used at school career fairs or anywhere you are discussing career opportunities. These brochures can be partnered with personalized materials for your agencies.

APWA’s Shaping the World of Public Works Booklet is perfect for use with both secondary schools and community outreach efforts. It is a great tool to provide tangible information about opportunities in public works for students, teachers, parents, and candidates.

Veterans in Public Works

Some of the best and the brightest serve our nation. Critical and key roles can be filled by veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses. The WDC has developed a comprehensive set of resources to support you in connecting with local veterans’ groups to enhance your recruiting efforts. Visit the link here to explore these important resources.

Reentry Population Workforce Efforts

The WCD members have been meeting with and learning from cities/towns who have been implementing successful second chance programs. We encourage you to take a few minutes to watch this video from the City of Columbus, Ohio which describes their program.
