With increasingly frequent and severe weather events, today’s public works engineers are facing great challenges in designing, operating, and maintaining the public infrastructure that serves our communities. At the same time, we have many willing partners such as architects, mechanical and industrial engineers, and planners working toward the same goals, all having valuable expertise and using excellent technology to develop many good new practices and strategies.
To develop holistic, effective responses on the local, regional, national, and international scales, all practitioners must collaborate effectively and communicate well with each other—that they “speak in a common language.” This session will introduce you to the many promising new initiatives currently being worked on in the general areas of sustainability and resiliency.
Following that introduction, FEMA, one of our most important and knowledgeable partners in sustainability and resiliency, will outline their most recent approaches to planning for and responding to the increasingly frequent and severe weather events we are experiencing in this era of climate change.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the many interdisciplinary strategies underway to develop more sustainable and resilient communities.
- Explain how all these efforts can be combined to develop a holistic, coordinated, effective response to climate change.
- Describe how FEMA is preparing to meet the challenge of responding effectively to continuing severe weather events and how we, as practitioners, might assist them to ensure the resiliency of our infrastructure and the safety of our communities.
