When facility or grounds components fail, customers are interrupted in completing their desired activities. A proactive approach using condition assessments and scheduling component replacement/renovation mitigates failures and service interruptions.

Providing safe functioning buildings and grounds is the goal of every facility and/or grounds manager. An unscheduled failure that negatively impacts the operations of an end user is the biggest fear of a facilities and/or grounds manager. This program will provide strategies to mitigate service interruptions. The program will discuss using facility/grounds condition assessments to create cyclic replacement schedules and develop renovation projects. Furthermore, a case study will be presented showing how Prince William County, Virginia, uses these strategies for the 22 fire and rescue stations in the County.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the value of completing condition assessments in terms of remaining useful life and risk mitigation strategies to keep public facilities functioning.
  • Discuss cyclic replacement schedules and future renovation projects in capital improvement programs and engage with key stakeholders such as finance departments, senior leadership, and elected officials based on the findings of a quality facility condition assessment.
  • Review how a municipality uses facility assessments to mitigate facility issues at fire stations.

This program offers 0.1 CEU credits for the one hour presentation portion of the program. The final half hour, discussions in the lounge area is optional.

This program is sponsored by the APWA Facilities and Grounds Committee.
