In addition to his role as Technical Director of Transportation, Darren Schulz acts as the Board of Directors Liaison for the Utilities and Public Rights-of-Way (UPROW) Committee and the Transportation Committee, and is also a member of the Finance Committee.

He has been a member of APWA for more than 25 years. He was elected to the Nevada Chapter Board in 2008, including a stint as chapter president in 2013, and continued to serve until his election to the APWA Board of Directors. Schulz has served on many chapter committees over the years. In 2017, the Nevada Chapter recognized him with the prestigious Robert Broadbent Distinguished Service Award for leadership and contribution to APWA and the public works profession. On the national level, he has been a part of the Council of Chapters, serving as delegate for Nevada since 2018, and as an alternate delegate for several years previously. He has served on several committees and task forces, including the Awards Committee, PACE Review Committee, National Nominating Committee, and Advocacy Committee. He has been fortunate to attend more than 20 APWA Congresses and PWX Conferences. In 2017, he was selected as an APWA Top Ten Public Works Leader of the Year.

Schulz is currently the public works director for Carson City, Nevada, a role he has held for the past 11 years. His department oversees transportation, water, wastewater, stormwater, streets, landfill, fleet, engineering, and traffic signals for the city. The department has an annual operating budget of more than $50M and oversees an annual capital budget of $100M with approximately 168 full-time staff. Schulz has more than 30 years of experience in public works administration, project management, civil engineering design, and construction management.
