Introduction to Basic Stormwater Concepts is the prerequisite course for the Stormwater Operations and Maintenance Certificate. It can be taken as a stand-alone course for CEUs; however, those intending to earn the certificate must complete AND PASS Introduction to Basic Stormwater Concepts.

The fee to register for the Introduction to Basic Stormwater Concepts is $99 for members and $125 for nonmembers.

The Stormwater Operations and Maintenance Certificate provides those responsible for stormwater operations a comprehensive understanding of concepts involved with operating and maintaining stormwater systems while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The program emphasizes strategies to identify and mitigate illicit discharges, structural best management practices (BMPs), and sustainability and resiliency related to stormwater operations. It also delves into using GIS tools for system mapping, and condition assessment to enhance operational efficiency, maintenance planning, and environmental protection. Designed for public works professionals responsible for stormwater systems, the program equips attendees with the knowledge and tools to operate and maintain stormwater systems while addressing the evolving challenges in stormwater practices, including climate change impacts and resource constraints.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the skills required to identify and address illicit discharges and illegal connections while maintaining compliance with municipal and federal stormwater regulations.
  2. Explore various BMPs, their effectiveness, and their application to improve stormwater quality and manage runoff sustainably.
  3. Describe best practices to incorporate climate resiliency and sustainability principles into stormwater management plans and infrastructure design.
  4. Utilize GIS tools for stormwater system mapping, tracking, and performance optimization to support proactive maintenance strategies.
  5. Explain the methods for assessing stormwater infrastructure condition through physical inspections and advanced techniques like CCTV inspections.
  6. Develop maintenance plans that balance operational efficiency with budget constraints, ensuring compliance with NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permit requirements and extending the lifecycle of stormwater infrastructure.
